Starting point

Creating an infotainment campaign on biosafety from scratch

The Global Young Academy, together with several global scientific institutions, needed to develop effective and engaging communication on biosafety. The main problem was the lack of awareness among scientists and the need for innovative educational tools that went beyond traditional written documents and guidelines.

The main challenges were:

  • Highly specialized topics to communicate.
  • Lack of engaging training materials on the topic of biosafety.
  • Lack of visual materials.
  • Difficulty in reaching a global audience with content that was clear and attractive.
  • Need for interactive and modern tools to stimulate dissemination.
  • Inability to film real-life biosafety situations due to security and sensitivity issues.

The goal of the project was to develop a communication system from scratch that would not only raise awareness among the scientific community, but also create engagement through interactive and multimedia content.

The Approach: AI systems to generate a visual style and scale

Analysis: The workshop

The first part consisted of an analysis through a webinar workshop with seven global biosecurity experts to define the content and check the accuracy of the content generated. The workshops were divided into two sessions: an exploratory session to gather information for processing, and a feedback session to present and correct the proposals made. All documents were made available to co-create content with researchers and help them convert their ideas into interactive quiz scenarios.

Artistic direction with an AI-driven approach

Starting from the content analysis, we created an AI-driven graphic and illustrative system, distilling an illustrative style from AI illustrations using open source models and AI training.

Creation of a multimedia and interactive content ecosystem

To meet the challenges of the project, we adopted an approach based on:

  • An interactive quiz with 10 biosafety scenarios, developed in a collaborative workshop with global experts in the field.
  • Visual communication guidelines with infographics to make key concepts more accessible for printing in laboratories.
  • Production of 10 awareness videos to support the editorial campaign on social media.
  • A dedicated landing page to collect all resources and provide centralized access to training material.

The Process: A new AI-driven creation paradigm

We followed a structured AI-based workflow to generate all campaign materials:

  1. Definition of a Visual Identity
    • We distilled a unique visual style by generating reference images using prompt engineering.
  2. Training an AI Model to Follow the Style
    • We created a series of specific scientific elements to trainan instance of Stable Diffusion (LoRA). LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation) is an efficient fine-tuning technique used to customize large generative AI models, such as Stable Diffusion for image generation or LLMs for text.
  3. Development of AI-Based Asset Generators
    • We have built AI tools based on text and visual references, including:
      • Character generators
      • Icon generators
      • Scene generators
  4. Content Animation
    • A combination of traditional animation and AI-assisted animation brought the generated assets to life.
  5. Integration of a Motion Capture Presenter
    • A digital host, guided by motion capture, introduced each scenario in the interactive quiz.
  6. AI-Generated Voice Synthesis
    • We trained open-source models to replicate the voice of a professional actor, using:
      • Text-driven synthesis and voice-driven synthesis to generate all voiceovers.
      • The AI-generated voice was then refined and improved by a professional actor.

Results

A significant impact on the scientific community

Increased global engagement: the interactive quiz and videos generated a high level of interaction among researchers

Active participation: thousands of scientists took part in the quiz, testing their knowledge through realistic scenarios.

Dissemination of best practices: the scientific institutions involved adopted the material produced for their training programs.

Increased awareness of biosafety: the project helped spread a key message among professionals in the sector.

Other results

🔹 Strengthening of the culture of scientific responsibility in the academic and research community.

🔹 Increased accessibility of information thanks to a visual and digital format.

🔹 Expansion of the initiative to new institutions thanks to the scalability of the format created.

Conclusion

“This project has redefined the way we train scientists on biosafety, combining technology and interactive storytelling to improve scientific dissemination.“

Thanks to a mix of digital innovation and collaboration with global experts, the Global Young Academy has developed an effective content ecosystem to raise awareness among the scientific community. This case study demonstrates how a strategic and technological approach can transform scientific communication, making it more accessible, engaging, and scalable.
