Recently, I was invited to give a talk at Gruppo Pragma, an important e-coaching and e-learning company with huge corporate clients. The goal was to share some of the innovations and case studies of applied generative AI in content production. During the Q&A session, a very valid question came from their staff: "How does this AI-driven approach change the current team and what is needed for the change?" My answer was simple: "The team is quite similar; what changes is the mindset, the tools, and the need for a creative technologist to wrap everything up."
It was then that I realized most people don't even know that Creative Technologists exist, let alone what we do. So, let's dive into what a Creative Technologist is and why this role is indispensable in this current landscape.
The Speed of Innovation: Keeping Up Without Burning Out
Let's face it, the relentless speed of technical innovations can make even the most seasoned marketing and creative teams feel like they’re constantly playing catch-up. Companies, marketing staff, and agencies often grapple with the stress and sense of inadequacy that comes with trying to stay ahead. This is where Creative Technologists step in as navigators, helping these organizations keep pace without burning out.
What is hype and what is real
The other question that I always get from people when they want to apply generative AI to their productions is "Do you have a link to recommend to learn this?" And the answer is not easy at all.
A big part of the fault is at the hands of big tech. Right now big tech companies bombard us with huge promises of simplicity and one button solutions, cherry picking the best examples they can generate, from Sora, to ChatGPT, to Midjourney. And yes, they create excellent outputs, but they are mostly conceived for mass consumption. They don't have much granularity, and they don't allow much control. They also mostly train with the data we are giving them, so that also creates a big problem in privacy and secrecy in companies.
Instead of being the users that use the tool, we are used by the tools
Instead of being the users that use the tool, we are used by the tools. The results are dull and, boring. A Creative technologist is someone who can navigate this and scratch below the surface, reaching to the technology behind these tools, that most of the times are available in open source versions, maybe not as powerful enough, but super powerful because modular, and combinable with other technologies if you know what you're doing.
The Creative Technologist: an Hybrid Professional
A Creative Technologist is a hybrid professional who combines creativity with technical expertise. This role bridges the gap between the creative and technical worlds, enabling innovative solutions that enhance and transform the way content is produced and consumed. We leverage a wide array of tools and technologies, in different realms, usually to push the boundaries of tools, and create innovative, compelling and engaging content and experiences, or optimize processes in the creative sector.
What CTs do
- Blending Art and Tech: We bring cutting-edge technologies like AI, AR, and VR into traditional creative workflows, enhancing storytelling and engagement.
- Generative Content Alchemy: Using coding, models, and data-driven approaches, we create or enhance content creation processes, allowing for example for the production of personalized and dynamic content at scale.
- Tech Troubleshooters: We address technical challenges that arise during the creative process, ensuring seamless execution from concept to final product, and we test tools before they reach the mass market.
- Creative Collaborators: Working alongside designers, developers, marketers, and content creators, we ensure that technology and creativity are harmoniously integrated.
Navigating exponential development
A Creative technologist is a skipper in a fast-moving digital seas. We guide brands through the choppy waters of rapid technological change, ensuring they stay on course. For example, a marketing team might struggle to implement the latest AI tools for personalized content. Instead of a superficial one-fits-all solution, we can step in, demystify the technology, manage expectations on what can and cannot be done, trim the hype, and integrate it seamlessly into their workflow. Sometimes we do it internally, and sometimes we do it at a company.
The definition of Automation in a creative context
For many, creativity and automation are two opposing terms. And it's comprehensible, because the word is tied with concepts like monotony, or dullness, of lack of personality. We don't believe in that. We believe that some very bureaucratic processes involving creativity can and should be accelerated when possible, leaving room for real creativity, that is making decisions.
By leveraging automation and generative technologies, we can significantly reduce the time and effort required to produce high-quality content. Even beyond mainstream tools. Using chatGPT is super useful for example, but you still need to "chat", and open an interface, etc. Sometimes these things can be skipped, weaving together custom tools to perform non creative tasks for us.
The Personal Touch
In today’s market, personalized content is king. Creative Technologists use data analytics and machine learning to create content that resonates with specific audience segments. This level of personalization enhances user engagement and improves the overall effectiveness of marketing campaigns.
Innovate to Captivate: Standing Out in a Crowded Space
In a crowded digital space, standing out is getting difficult, specially when everyone uses the same tool to do the same things. Creative Technologists push the boundaries of what’s possible, introducing novel technologies and creative solutions that differentiate brands from their competitors. Whether it’s an interactive AR experience or a dynamically generated social media campaign, our innovations capture attention and drive engagement.
Scalability: The Secret Sauce
One of the most significant advantages of integrating technology into content production is scalability. With the right tools and processes in place, we can scale content production without compromising quality. This ability is essential for global campaigns and brands that need to maintain a consistent presence across multiple markets and platforms.
From Local to Global
Consider a global beverage company that needs to roll out a campaign in various languages and cultural contexts. A Creative Technologist can implement automated translation and localization tools, ensuring that each piece of content feels native to its target audience with minimum human intervention, even during the production process. This approach not only saves time but also maintains brand integrity across diverse markets.
Conclusion
The role of a Creative Technologist is more critical than ever in a content-driven world. By blending creativity with technical prowess, we enable brands to produce engaging, high-quality content at scale. Our work not only enhances efficiency and personalization but also drives innovation, ensuring that brands can stand out and connect with their audiences in meaningful ways.
As the landscape of media and content production continues to evolve, the role of Creative Technologists will only become more vital. Embracing this hybrid approach is not just an option but a necessity for those looking to thrive in the digital age.
